  • CRAWLING

Search engines use programs which are called spiders, bots or crawlers, to scour the internet. Search engines may do this every few days, so there is a possibility that the content to be out-of-date until they crawl your website again.

In case of ranking, the search results are ranked which are based on a number of factors. The factors may include keyword density, speed and links. Search engine main purpose is to provide relevant results.

WHY SEARCH ENGINES ARE IMPORTANT?

Even though you know some of the reasons why search engines are important but theoretically there is part of daily life for two types of people.

  • People who search to get information
  • Website’s owners who optimize their websites in order to get on the top rank in the search results.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

Search engines are classified into three categories based on how search engine works. The types are explained below:-

  • Crawler based search engines
  • Human powered directories
  • Hybrid search engines
  • Other special search engines

  1. CRAWLER BASED SEARCH ENGINES

A crawler, bot or spider for crawling are used by the search engines. Moreover, the indexing of new content to the search database is used by the search engines.

There are four basic steps which every crawler based search engines follow before displaying any sites in the search results to its users.

  1. Crawling
  2. Indexing
  3. Calculating Relevancy
  4. Retrieving the Result
  1. CRAWLING

The whole web is crawled by the search engines to get the web pages available and then it also ranks those web pages according to some of the factors which are already discussed above. The crawling process depends upon the processing speed of the search engines.

It depends that search engine will take some few days between crawling. It can be seen like if you already see your web page in the result bar even though you have deleted it, it just means that the crawling process is yet not completed.

  1. INDEXING

Indexing is a process of identifying the words and expressions which will describe the page in a best manner.

The words which are identified are referred as KEYWORDS and the page is assigned to the identified keywords. When the crawler does not understand the meaning of your page then it may rank lower on the search results.

Most of the search engine are crawler based search engines and the example Crawler Based Search Engines are

  • Google
  • Bing
  • Yahoo!
  • Baidu
  • Yandex

After these search engines there are some more search engines like DuckDuckGo, AOL and Ask. These search engines are also crawler based search engines.

  1. HUMAN POWERED DIRECTORIES

Human powered directories also referred as open directory system which depends on human based activities for listings.

This type of search engine is works like:-

  • Site owner submits a short description of the site to the directory with category in which it is to be listed.
  • Submitted site manually reviewed and added in the appropriate category or it can also get rejected for listing.
  • KEYWORDS entered in a search box will be matched with the description of the sites and this means the changes made to the content of a web pages are not taken into consideration as it is only the description that matters.

Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ are the perfect examples of human powered directories. Unfortunately, search engines like Google, wiped out all those human powered directory style search engines out of the web and became the most used search engine of all times.

  1. HYBRID SEARCH ENGINES

Hybrid means the mix of two. Thus Hybrid Search Engines is that search engine which use both crawler based and manual indexing for listing the sites in search results.

Search engines like Google basically uses crawlers as a primary mechanism and human powered directories as secondary mechanism.

There are manual filtering of search result happens to remove the copied and spam sites to protect the users from hacking. When a site is being identified for spam activities then that website owner needs to take corrective action and resubmit the site to search engines in order to get to be in the results in future.

  1. OTHER TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

Search engines contain different types of bots for exclusively displaying images, videos, news, products and local listings for particular category. For example, Google News page can be used to search only news from different newspapers.

Search engines like Dogpile collects meta information of the pages from other search engines and directories to display in the search results. These search engines are also called metasearch engines.
