WHAT ARE NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS?

Nofollow links are links with a rel=”nofollow” HTML tag applied to web pages and this tag tells search engines to ignore that link. NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS do not pass PageRank they likely don’t impact search engine rankings.

NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS?

NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS are used when the creator does not want to get the link checked in the search engine. NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS do not affect page rankings.

Even if these links do not affect page rankings still these links are potential enough to bring traffic to a website.

WHY SEARCH ENGINES CREATE THE NOFOLLOW TAG?

Google developed the nofollow tag to combat blog comment spam. As blogs grew the comment spam also grew and spammers would leave links back to their site in the comments. All of this created problems like

  • Spam sites started to rank well in search engine results even if they don’t provide satisfying content or information to the users.
  • As all of this worked well the spam went out of control and in 2005, Google developed NOFOLLOW TAG and also added it to its algorithm.

WHAT TYPES OF LINKS ARE NOFOLLOW?

Well basically any link that has the nofollow tag is considered as nofollow link but in general, inbound links from these sources tend to be nofollow:

  • Links from widgets
  • Blog comments
  • Links in press releases
  • Links in forum posts or other forms of user-generated content
  • Links from any social media platform

WHEN NOFOLLOW LINKS SHOULD BE USED?

1. PAGES WHICH DON’T WANT TO ENDORSE

Sometimes you simply need to link to websites that you don’t want to approve. This can be explained by an example

Variety Magazine reported on Pornhub releasing a non-adult film and all the links in that article are followed, they decided to use a nofollow attribute when linking to PornHub’s annual review.

2. SPONSORED LINKS

Buying links is an activity that is strictly prohibited by Google’s guidelines but the only way is to use a nofollow attribute on all the sponsored links, more precisely rel=”sponsored”.

3. AFFILIATE LINKS

The affiliate links are not actually “sponsored links” but it is best practice to nofollow them.

One of the people called John Mueller from Google said the best practice is to use rel=”sponsored” for affiliate links.

4. USER-GENERATED CONTENT

In sites where user-friendly content is available, the NOFOLLOW links can be used as any time a visitor is able to insert a link on your website it should be automatically nofollowed. The attribute for this case is rel=”ugc”

So this was all about NOFOLLOW BACKLINKS. The reason why it was developed is explained in a brief way and under what situations these links should be used is also explained. If you have any queries then leave them in the comment section and I will reach out to you with an answer as soon as possible.
